VTEC System Oil Pressure Troubleshooting

Special Tools Required
Oil pressure gauge attachment (  07NAJ-P070100)
 

• Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS before this procedure. If there are any DTCs indicated, troubleshoot them first, then do this procedure.
  
• Check that the oil pressure indicator goes off after starting engine before this procedure.
  

1.	Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

2.	Do the VTEC TEST in the INSPECTION MENU with the HDS. Can you hear the rocker arm oil control solenoid click? YES - Go to 7. NO - Go to 3.

3.	Turn the ignition switch OFF.

4.	Remove the cowl cover.

5.	Disconnect the rocker arm oil control valve 2P connector.

6.	Connect the battery positive terminal (+) to terminal No. 1, and the negative terminal (-) with a wire.   Is the rocker arm oil control valve clicking? YES - Update the ECM/PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM/PCM. NO - Go to 22.

7.	Turn the ignition switch OFF.

8.	Remove the cowl cover.

9.	Remove the bolt from the rocker arm oil control valve and connect the special tool as shown, the install the bolt that was removed to the oil pressure gauge attachment (A). NOTE: Replace the O-ring after installing the bolt back into the rocker arm oil control solenoid assembly.

10.	Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm (min-1) without load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on.

11.	Check the oil pressure at the engine speed of 1,000 to 2,000 rpm (min-1). NOTE: Keep the measuring time as short as possible (less than 1 minute). Is the oil pressure below 49 kPa (0.5 kgf/cm2, 7 psi)? YES - Go to 12. NO - Go to 22.

12.	Turn the ignition switch OFF.

13.	Disconnect the rocker arm oil control valve 2P connector.

14.	Connect the battery positive terminal (+) to terminal No. 1, and the negative terminal (-) with a wire.

15.	Check the oil pressure at the engine speed of 3,500 rpm (min-1). NOTE: Keep the measuring time as short as possible (less than 1 minute). Is the oil pressure above 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi)? YES - The VTEC system oil pressure is normal.n NO - Go to 16.

16.	Turn the ignition switch OFF.

17.	Remove the rocker arm oil control valve.

18.	Check the rocker arm oil control valve filter for dirt and clogging. Is the rocker arm oil control valve filter dirty or clogged? YES - Replace the engine oil, engine oil filter, and the rocker arm oil control valve filter, then go to 19. NO - Go to 20.

19.	Remove the bolt from the rocker arm oil control valve and connect the special tool as shown, the install the bolt that was removed to the oil pressure gauge attachment (A). NOTE: Replace the O-ring after installing the bolt back into the rocker arm oil control valve assembly.

20.	Connect the battery positive terminal (+) to terminal No. 1, and the negative terminal (-) with a wire.

21.	Check the oil pressure at the engine speed of 3,500 rpm (min-1). NOTE: Keep the measuring time as short as possible (less than 1 minute). Is the oil pressure above 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi)? YES - Troubleshooting is complete.n NO - Go to 22.

22.	Replace the rocker arm oil control valve.

23.	Remove the bolt from the rocker arm oil control valve and connect the special tool as shown, the install the bolt that was removed to the oil pressure gauge attachment (A). NOTE: Replace the O-ring after installing the bolt back into the rocker arm oil control valve.

24.	Connect the battery positive terminal (+) to terminal No. 1, and the negative terminal (-) with a wire.

Check the oil pressure at the engine speed of 3,500 rpm (min-1). NOTE: Keep the measuring time as short as possible (less than 1 minute). Is the oil pressure above 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi)? YES - Troubleshooting is complete.n NO - Clean the oil passage of the cylinder block or replace the cylinder block.n
