Lubricants and Fluids

Used engine oil may cause skin cancer if repeatedly left in contact with the skin for prolonged periods. Although this is unlikely unless you handle used oil on a daily basis, it is still advisable to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possible after handling used oil.

For the details of lubrication points and type of lubricants to be applied, refer to the illustrated index and various work procedures (such as Assembly/Reassembly, Replacement, Overhaul, Installation, etc.) contained in each section.

Lubrication Points Lubricant
Engine API service grade: SL or higher fuel-efficient oil
SAE viscosity: See chart.
Manual transmission Honda Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF)
Always use Honda MTF*. Using motor oil can cause stiffer shifting because it does not contain the proper additives.
Automatic transmission Honda ATF-Z1
Always use Honda ATF-Z1. Using a non-Honda ATF can affect shift quality.
Brake system (including ABS/VSA line) Brake Fluid DOT 3 or DOT 4
We recommend genuine Honda Brake Fluid. Using a non-Honda brake fluid can cause corrosion and decrease the life of the system.
Clutch line (manual transmission) Brake Fluid DOT 3 or DOT 4
Power steering system Honda Power Steering Fluid
Always use Honda Power Steering Fluid. Using any other type of power steering fluid or automatic transmission fluid can cause increased wear and poor steering in cold weather.

SANDEN SP-10 (P/N 38897-P13-A01 or 38899-P13-A01)
For refrigerant HFC-134a (R-134a)

If genuine Honda MTF is not available, use API service SL or higher grade motor oil with a viscosity of SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 as a temporary replacement.
