Front Seat Belt Replacement

For some models: SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations and the precautions and procedures before performing repairs or service.

NOTE: Check the front seat belts for damage, and replace them if necessary.

Front Seat Belt - Without Outer Lap Tensioner


1.If equipped with a seat belt tensioner, disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.

2.Slide the front seat forward fully, and remove the anchor cover (A).

 

3.Remove the lower anchor bolt (A).

 

4.Remove the center pillar lower trim:


5.Remove the center pillar upper trim and slider:


6.Remove the upper anchor bolt (A).

 

7.If equipped, disconnect the seat belt tensioner connector (A). Remove the upper retractor mounting bolt (B) and the lower retractor bolt (C), then remove the front seat belt (D) and retractor (E).

 

8.If necessary, remove the front seat belt
protector (F).

9.Remove the shoulder anchor adjuster (A).

 

10.Install the seat belt in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:

  • Apply medium strength type liquid thread lock to the anchor bolts before reinstallation.
  • Tighten the bolts by hand first, then tighten to specification with a torque wrench.
  • Check that the retractor locking mechanism functions as described.
  • Assemble the washer, collar, and bushing on the upper anchor bolt as shown.
  • If the seat belt tensioner has been deployed, replace the front seat belt protector with a new one.
  • Before installing the anchor bolts, make sure there are no twists or kinks in the seat belt.
  • If equipped with a seat belt tensioner, perform the following works:
    • Make sure the seat belt tensioner connector is properly plugged in.
    • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
    • Check for any DTCs, and clear them using the HDS. If the DTCs will not clear, perform the necessary troubleshooting.
    • Set the clock.

Front Seat Belt - With Outer Lap Tensioner


1.Prepare a sheet of cardboard which is 2—2.5 mm (0.08—1.0 in.) thick.

NOTE: If there is no suitable cardboard, put some seats of thin paper together until they will be required thick.

2.Make a jig (A) from the prepared cardboard (B).

3.Disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.

4.Slide the front seat forward fully.

5.Slowly insert the jig (A) into holes (B) in the back of the lap connector cover (C) to release the sublatch spring (D). Be sure the jig is inserted vertically.

 

6.Leave the jig (A) set in the lap connector cover (B) to keep the sublatch spring (C) open. Carefully insert the tip of a small screwdriver (D) into the hole in the lap connector cover, and unlock the lap connector by pushing in on the screwdriver.

 

7.Unbuckle the front seat belt lap connector (A).

-1 Remove the jig (B).
-2 While pulling the front seat belt (C) upward, remove the screwdriver (D). As soon as you remove the screwdriver from the lap connector (E), the anchor connector will come off the lap connector.

 

8.Remove the center pillar lower trim:


9.Remove the center pillar upper trim and slider:

10.Disconnect and detach the seat belt outer lap tensioner connector (A), remove the lower anchor bolt (B), then remove the outer lap tensioner (C).

 

11.Remove the upper anchor bolt (A).

 

12.Disconnect the seat belt tensioner connector (A). Remove the upper retractor mounting bolt (B) and the lower retractor bolt (C), then remove the front seat belt (D) and retractor (E).

 

13.If necessary, remove the front seat belt protector (F).

14.Remove the shoulder anchor adjuster (A).

 

15.Install the seat belt in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:

  • Apply medium strength type liquid thread lock to the anchor bolts before reinstallation.
  • Tighten the bolts by hand first, then tighten to specification with a torque wrench.
  • Check that the retractor locking mechanism functions as described.
  • Assemble the washer, collar, and bushing on the upper and lower anchor bolts as shown.
  • If the seat belt tensioner has been deployed, replace the front seat belt protector with a new one.
  • Before installing the anchor bolts, make sure there are no twists or kinks in the seat belt.
  • Make sure the seat belt tensioner is properly plugged in.
  • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
  • Check for any DTCs, and clear them using the HDS. If the DTCs will not clear, perform the necessary troubleshooting.
  • Set the clock.

Seat Belt Buckle


1.If equipped with a side airbag, disconnect the negative cable from the battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.

2.Remove the front seat.

3.With seat belt switch: Detach the seat belt switch connector (A). On the driver's seat, detach the harness clip (B). On the passenger's seat, release the wire tie (C). LHD is shown; RHD is symmetrical.

4.Remove the center anchor bolt (A), then remove the seat belt buckle (B).

 


5.With seat belt switch: Release the harness clip (C), and pull the seat belt switch harness (D) out through the space between the seat cushion and the seat linkage. LHD is shown; RHD is symmetrical.

6.Install the buckle in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:

  • Assemble the washers and collar on the center anchor bolt as shown.
  • Apply medium strength type liquid thread lock to the center anchor bolt before reinstallation.
  • Tighten the bolts by hand first, then tighten to specification with a torque wrench.
  • If equipped with a side airbag, perform the following works:
    • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
    • Set the clock.
